Steve Swatt

Steve Swatt is a veteran Sacramento-based journalist, political analyst and the author of an award-winning book on California’s political history. Swatt spent twenty-three years at KCRA-TV as its political and policy reporter, contributing to “NBC Nightly News,” NBC’s “Today” and various political and public affairs programs for PBS. For many years, Swatt held the distinction of being California's only full-time television reporter covering the state capitol. Today, he serves as a host for Comcast Newsmakers in California.

While at KCRA, Swatt covered every major ballot proposition, presidential and gubernatorial campaign, and 10 presidential nominating conventions, as well as issues in the state legislature and the daily activities of Governors Reagan, Brown, Deukmejian and Wilson. The Sacramento Bee once referred to his election commentary as “the best on local television.” Before joining KCRA, Swatt was a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner and United Press International in Los Angeles.

Through his work with a statewide public affairs company, Swatt directed legislative and voter issue campaigns, and has taught political communication and issues management at California State University Sacramento. Throughout his career, Swatt has won numerous public affairs and journalism awards, including a Northern California Emmy®, and was recently honored by the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences for his contributions to journalism and his community.

Swatt received a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley.
