Addressing Indiana's Maternal Mortality Rate

In the United States, nearly 21 women die for every 100,000 births; Indiana's maternal mortality rate is more than double that. The United Health Foundation's America's Health Rankings Report, which uses data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, defines maternal mortality as when a women dies during pregnancy or within 42 days postpartum. In 2016, the most recent data year available, 50 women in Indiana died from pregnancy and birth related complications. The Indiana State Department of Health proves this rate is not showing signs of slowing. Representative Vanessa Summers has joined a committee to study this trend thanks to a bill put forth by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and stops by to discuss the details.
