Love, Helping Veterans - 5:17

Josh Plummer, a veteran who has benefited from the Veterans Drop-In Center will speak on behalf of the non-profit, run by Pat Ambrose. The mission is to provide a safe, supportive, and positive social environment where all veterans and their families can give and receive help transitioning into post-service life. Providing meals as well as services such as haircuts, computer training, showers, and laundry are among the tangible services. Providing a supportive environment and making a difference in the lives of veterans is the result of the love applied by those who provide the services. The primary annual fundraising event is a November 5k run/walk. The organization needs a new site because there is not enough space in the current location to serve the number of veterans who show up each day, who are either homeless, or recovering from various addictions, PTSD, and struggle with job searches.

Changing Crime Trend in Rockford - 5:22

Rockford has been in the top ten most dangerous cities for many years. Rockford's police department has turned to technology to increase efficiencies while building trust with the community members most effected by the violent crime. Additionally, thirty percent of the violent crime is domestic violence related. Rockford police have partnered with universities and other private partners to approach domestic violence holistically in effort to stop the cycle of violence. To date, violent crime is down 15% in Rockford illustrating early successes.

Arts for Everyone!

The Rockford Area Arts Council wants our region to be a place where the creativity and joy that comes from the arts is available to everyone. They want the arts to flourish and become available for all to express themselves as unique individuals and bring together diverse communities. They do that through providing grants for community arts projects, organizing free public arts events like ArtScene & the Beattie Is...Arts Festival, and offering summer arts programs for children and an arts apprenticeship program for youth. The Arts Council serves as a resource and a catalyst to infuse the arts into projects such as trauma informed care, neighborhood police outreach, and Rockford Day-815. They invite all who share their vision of the arts for everyone to join in the work through membership and volunteering.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity building homes in our community. RAHFH does more than just build homes though, we're building capacity in our families by ensuring they have the tools they need to be successful homeowners. We're building their self-reliance by helping them see that it's possible to achieve their dreams. We're building stability for the hundreds of Habitat kids that never have to worry about switching schools again because they have a permanent place to call home. We're not just building homes, we're building hope.
