Every 9 minutes, a child in Texas experiences abuse or neglect. Nearly 4,000 children in the Houston area have experienced such life-threatening abuse or neglect that they had to be removed from their homes and placed in foster care. Child Advocates trains everyday people to advocate for the best interests of these children in court so they can find safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible. The Immunization Partnership helps individuals, physicians and others to make smart choices about protecting their communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. Every year, roughly 3 million people die from vaccine-preventable diseases worldwide, and countless more suffer life-long disabilities. TIP endeavors to prevent what's preventable. All across Texas, TIP conducts community and provider forums to educate the public on the latest in vaccine-related science and policy, advocates for evidence-based legislation, and builds the capacity of community-based immunization coalitions.

The Woods Project (TWP) provides low-income high school students with transformative, experiential learning opportunities in the outdoors. Beginning in 2006 with 11 students in Yosemite, TWP now serves nearly 700 students each year. TWP offers students the kind of access to outdoor spaces and recreational activities that are more common among their higher-income peers. In celebration of Black History Month, Comcast recently announced a partnership with City of Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner, to honor 10 Houston community volunteers at the first-ever Mayor’s History Makers Awards held on February 9, 2018. Held at the Houstonian Hotel, the honorees were recognized for their commitment to making a difference in the community through volunteerism, mentorship, advocacy and civic engagement.
The volunteers were commended as exceptional individuals having demonstrated selfless commitment in their communities. They played a vital role in positive change and continue to help celebrate diversity in the city of Houston. As part of the recognition, each honoree will be featured in a 30-second Public Service Announcement that will air on Comcast cable. In addition, Comcast NBCUniversal will also donate $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of the honoree’s choice.
The mission of Kids Meals is to end childhood hunger by delivering free healthy meals to the doorsteps of Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children and through collaboration provide their families with resources to help end the cycle of poverty. Kids’ Meals is a first-responder to children ages five-years old and under facing debilitating hunger due to extreme poverty. Every weekday, year-round, from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers prepare thousands of healthy lunches consisting of a sandwich, nutritious snack and 100% juice or milk. They have six vans that deliver meals M-F to children enrolled in our program.
