A significant part of our work is owning and managing nature sanctuaries to protect habitat for birds and provide people recreational opportunities in nature. The Immunization Partnership helps individuals, physicians and others to make smart choices about protecting their communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. Every year, roughly 3 million people die from vaccine-preventable diseases worldwide, and countless more suffer life-long disabilities. TIP endeavors to prevent what's preventable. All across Texas, TIP conducts community and provider forums to educate the public on the latest in vaccine-related science and policy, advocates for evidence-based legislation, and builds the capacity of community-based immunization coalitions. Allison Winnike, President and CEO spoke about flu season and the importance of getting vaccinated.

Mexican Institute

Mexican Institute - 4:30

The Mexican Institute of Greater Houston (MIGH) is a significant contributor to Community Development because we are increasing our student’s workforce skills so they can opt for better paid jobs. MIGH offers Basic Computer Technology Literacy Education for Adults. It is taught in English and Spanish and reaches parents through the schools attended by their children (K-12). We have been educating at risk LEPs about the benefits of using computers at home and at work, teaching them several software packages. Our programs primarily serve parents (80% woman/20% men) of school-aged children throughout the State of Texas. Carlos J. Lopez, President spoke about their Computer Literacy Courses for Adults.

As a full-service, Federally Qualified Health Center, Legacy identifies unmet needs and gaps in health-related services and develops client-centered programs to address those needs. A United Way-affiliated agency since 1990, we currently provide adult primary care, pediatrics, dental care, vision services, behavioral health services, OB/GYN and maternity, vaccinations and immunizations, health promotion and community outreach, wellness and nutrition, and comprehensive HIV/AIDS care. Katy Caldwell, CEO is here to talk about their programs and services.

Comcast NBCU Elevates Houston Community with Mayor's History Makers Awards - 2:53

In celebration of Black History Month, Comcast recently announced a partnership with City of Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner, to honor 10 Houston community volunteers at the first-ever Mayor’s History Makers Awards held on February 9, 2018. Held at the Houstonian Hotel, the honorees were recognized for their commitment to making a difference in the community through volunteerism, mentorship, advocacy and civic engagement. The volunteers were commended as exceptional individuals having demonstrated selfless commitment in their communities. They played a vital role in positive change and continue to help celebrate diversity in the city of Houston. As part of the recognition, each honoree will be featured in a 30-second Public Service Announcement that will air on Comcast cable. In addition, Comcast NBCUniversal will also donate $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of the honoree’s choice.
