Veterans Treatment Courts ensure that when our veterans return home and are struggling with the transition home and get into trouble with the law because of a mental-health disorder, a substance abuse disorder and/or trauma, they receive the structure, the treatment, and the mentoring they need to get their lives back on track.
One in five veterans has symptoms of a mental health disorder - or cognitive Impairment and research shows a link between combat-related mental illness and substance abuse. Left untreated, mental health disorders that are common among veterans, can directly lead to involvement in the criminal justice system. More than 20 million Americans cope with vision loss, and that number is growing due to baby boomers reaching retirement age and beyond and higher survival rates for premature babies, many with multiple disabilities. Paul Schroeder of American Foundation for the Blind discusses efforts to be sure that technology is accessible to this population.
Schroeder stated, "Vision loss...can be very tough and it is difficult for people to adjust to. Most people lose their site... as they are aging."
