Victory Gardens's 17-18 season has been written by six women, including two of Latino and African American descent. The season's directors include two Latinas and an Asian male. The season will also feature Chicago's finest culturally diverse actors and designers, while five assistant directors from our Directors Inclusion Initiative will include emerging directors who identify as people of color, disabled, women, transgender, and gender non-conforming. In addition to the conversations led by artists after every performance, Victory Gardens will present 10-12 curated events for each production for its Public Programs series, aimed at specific cultural communities, and are all directly related to each play's issues & themes. These presentations include panel discussions, special performances (spoken word, play readings, music, etc.), & dialogues with artists. The shows are the Tony-winning musical FUN HOME by Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron, directed by Gary Griffin; FADE by Victory Gardens Ensemble Playwright Tanya Saracho, directed by Sandra Marquez (a co-production with Teatro Vista); the world premiere of BREACH: A MANIFESTO ON RACE IN AMERICA THROUGH THE EYES OF A BLACK GIRL RECOVERING FROM SELF-HATE by Antoinette Nwandu, directed by Lisa Portes; the world premiere of DOING IT by Boo Killibrew, directed by Artistic Director Chay Yew; & MIES JULIE by Yael Farber, directed by Dexter Bullard. One of the theater's core values is a commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion on our stages, our staff & board, and in our audience. Every story we produce celebrates, reflects & represents the histories, experiences and issues, gender, class, racism, LGBTQIA, gun violence, immigration, recidivism, etc., of Chicago's myriad cultures & communities, giving them more voice and visibility, and our audience a unique theatrical experience and a platform to dialogue towards a more inclusive citizenship
