It's important to have a safe, sound and competitive financial services system. The Connecticut Department of Banking protects against unfair and unlawful consumer related financial transactions. CT?Department of Banking Commissioner Jorge Perez sits down with Eric Clemons for a Comcast Newsmakers interview at Gateway Community College in New Haven Connecticut. Topics include the mortgage crisis of 2008 and the speed of the recovery in Connecticut; as well as resources the Department offer that consumers may not be aware of, particularly fraud protection.
What are some other top consumer?concerns and what is the banking?department doing to protect Connecticut?citizens in that area?
"Well we get a lot of complaints about?people being taken advantage of and I'm?glad to announce that over the last five?years we have recovered over 65 million?dollars for?consumers on average about,?a little bit over 12 million dollars. In?addition to that, we have been putting a?lot of emphasis working with the FBI and?the Justice Department to lock up some of those real bad apples. In fact this?year we've had three federal grand jury
Consumer Assistance and Educational Outreach
The Department of Banking is committed to protecting Connecticut citizens in transactions with financial institutions, as directed by state law, and in assisting with complaints and dispute resolution. Agency employees will promptly?assist consumers with issues involving banks, credit unions, investment problems, mortgage lending and other consumer credit matters, foreclosure assistance and issues involving rental security deposits.
The Department of Banking has set a priority on educating the public through outreach. Department staff is available to give?free informative talks and presentations?on an array of topics including investor education, credit repair, fraud, banking scams and identity theft.
