Diego Sanchez, Openly Transgender, Director of Policy for PFLAG
"In terms of self identification... It's like being a Washington National ... fan, and someone calling you a New York Met.? It just doesn't fit."
There are an estimated 1.5 million transgender people in the US, yet only about 1/3 of states provide legal protection to transgender people. "Our rates of rejection and risk are higher than any other part of the LGBT community," states Diego Sanchez, Director of Policy for PFLAG National. Sanchez discusses how public policy can become more inclusive of the LGBT community.
Diego Miguel Sanchez was the first openly transgender person to work as a legislative staff member on Capitol Hill. He testified before Congress in the Transgender Discrimination Hearing in 2008.
