Juan Dies, Executive Director, co-founder - Sones de Mexico Ensemble
Juan Dies, co-founder of Sones de México Ensemble, Chicago’s Grammy™ Nominated Mexican folk music organization, provides an update on their expanded their youth guitar program. The program debuted in 2015 with a beginning guitar summer class for 9-14 year olds. Now they offer 3 guitar levels in Pilsen and Rogers Park, and they have initiated over 70 youth on the guitar. These one-hour classes are offered year-round, once a week on Saturdays. They are taught by Gonzalo Cordova, a founding member of this organization, which started in 1994 in response to a lack of exposure for traditional Mexican folk music. The classes are in Spanish by request from the parents in order to deepen the cultural immersion. Spring classes begin Saturday, March 4 in both locations and continue until May 27.
